Ho, July 12, GNA- Mrs Mawusi Agbezuhlor Mawutor, Volta Regional Director of Department of Social Welfare has emphasized the need for citizens to be empowered to contribute their quota to national development.
She said one of the objectives of the Department of Social Welfare was to ensure that persons facing vulnerability were integrated into the mainstream development for empowerment.
Mrs Mawutor, speaking at a programme to sensitise persons with disabilities on the revised District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) Guideline, 2022, said “people cannot contribute to development if they are not empowered.”
The Director said the Government was committed to getting everyone empowered and that the DACF aimed at empowering persons with disabilities to be economically independent.
She said social work was dynamic and urged all to open to change because the needs of human beings kept changing, pointing out that the power of change was incumbent upon the way people think, perceive themselves and issues.
Mrs Mawutor admonished the citizenry to avoid stigma and discrimination against persons with disabilities, saying everyone was prone to disability at a point in time.
She urged persons with disabilities to work closely with their leaders, speak up when they faced challenges, noting that her outfit was ready to support them.
Mr Kwame Mensah, Programmes Manager, Ghana Federation of Disability Organisation, who took the participants through the revised guideline said it was an improvement on the existing one and urged persons with disabilities to read the revised guideline to acquaint themselves with its contents.
The programme was sponsored by Ghana Somubi Dwumadie (Ghana Participation Programme), with funding support from UKAID through Option’s Led Consortium
