Garu (UE), July 22, GNA- Communities along the reconstructed Tamne Dam in the Garu District, Upper East Region, are likely to get flooded as the rains intensify.
Mr William Asaana Adams, the Garu District Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) said the Tamne, Zambala No. 1 and 2, Kug-zua, Dagbiri, Natinga and Gaago communities which are close to the Dam needed relocation before heavier rains.
Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Garu, he said preparation to sensitise farmers and communities along the dam would start soon in collaboration with partners especially the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA).
He said a heavy windstorm which hit the area in April this year affected 372 houses district wide and took one person’s life at Bultieliasi whilst the health centre and a school that were affected had been reroofed and handed over by the assembly for return of normal work and activities in the district.
“NADMO depends on government and individual donors and in such disaster situation its responsibility is to do the assessment and report”.
He said his outfit was still linking up with Assembly Members from the areas that were affected for updates and advised the people to be cautious whenever there was heavy rain at night.
Mr Adams said last Year 115.6 hectares of farmlands at Tempane were submerged during torrential rains which led to the Tamne Irrigation Dam and other water bodies overflowing their banks causing floods at Zambala Bugri Gaago , Kug-Zua, Gella–Kolgo, Napaadi Arazim, Kolsabilgu , Zulli and Kugri communities.
He said the Assembly had built 11 self-contained quarters out of 13 houses to replace the houses that were lost to the floods last year for the relocation of the affected families in the area.
Meanwhile the Water Resources Commission (WRC) in the Upper East Region in response to recent heavy inundating rainfall and flooding in the Fumbisi area said the Bagre Dam was not a contributory factor since the area was too far off the main White Volta which usually receives the spilled water from the Dam.
Mr Andrew Asaviansa, Assistant White Volta Basin Officer said current happenings at Fumbisi in the Builsa South District was as a result of a back flow which caused water coming from the Sisily and Kulpong Rivers in the area to overflow their banks.
He said WRC was yet to get updates on the Bagre dam from their counter parts in Burkina Faso.
