Kumasi, July 14, GNA – The National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) has condemned the destruction of public property by some aggrieved members of the Bosome Freho District Assembly.
The angry assembly members allegedly destroyed tables and chairs as well as other items in the district’s assembly hall after a scheduled meeting to pass a vote of no confidence on the District Chief Executive, Mr Yaw Danso, could not come on.
Four of the Assembly members, Mr. Amoako Mensah, Tebeso Electoral Area, Mr. Clement Osei, Freso Korchikrom Electoral Area, Mr. Lot Adu Asare of Yapesah/Kokoben Electoral Area and Mr. Maxwell Boachie Degraft of Dunkura Electoral Area, are currently on the police wanted list.
A statement signed by Mr Godwin Ahianyo, the Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer, said the four were to report to any nearest police station in their own interest.
Mr. Michael Opoku, the NALAG Representative of Ashanti, speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi, described the incident as “irresponsible and unfortunate.”
He said although members might have their grievances, the unlawful actions were not the way of meeting their demands.
“Even though you have your grievances, that does not mean you should take the law into your hands and destroy the hard earned state properties.
I am even more concerned about the properties being destroyed, where will the assembly convene for meetings now that these properties have been destroyed?” he quizzed.
According to Mr Opoku, members of the Bosome Freho district Assembly were going to meet to deliberate on issues bothering them, and also attempt to pass a vote of no confidence against the sitting District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Yaw Danso.
However, a law court in Kumasi served an injunction on the said meeting and the members who became angry at the decision of the court, decided to take the law into their hands and destroyed the properties in the assembly hall.
Mr. Opoku, who is also the Presiding Member of Sekyere Central District Assembly, advised assembly members to desist from any act likely to disturb the peace of local governance and Ghana at large.
He reminded the assembly members of their responsibilities as the representatives of the people and urged them to diligently render services that promoted national interest and cohesion and not their personal interest.
