GJA constitutes Media Awards Review Committee

Accra, July 22, GNA – The National Executive of the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) has constituted a committee to review the GJA Media Awards.

 It is part of efforts to make the annual awards better and more responsive to the needs and expectations of members.

The seven-member Committee is chaired by Dr Sarah Akrofi-Quarcoe, Lecturer, Department of Communication Studies, University of Ghana with Mr Ebenezer Ampaabeng, Director of Television, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation and Ms Doreen Hammond, Editor, The Mirror as Members.

The rest are: Mr A. B. Kafui Kanyi, Deputy News Editor, Ghana News Agency as Member and Secretary; Nana Yaw Kesseh, News Editor, Peace FM, Member; Mr Fortune Alimi, Executive Editor, Daily Guide Network, Member and Mr Latif Abubakar, Programme Manager, Globe Production also as Member.

Article 3 (j) of the GJA Constitution 2004 provides that: “The Aims and Objectives of the Association shall be to reward and honour outstanding members periodically”.

Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of the GJA, in a statement said the Association instituted its media awards organised annually to celebrate excellence in journalism by its members.

The GJA President said, after years of organising the media awards, it had become necessary to review the flagship programme and “make it better.”

 As part of its Terms of Reference, the Committee will, among others, review the categories of the awards, eligibility criteria for the awards, processes of filing entries, nature and form of organisation of the awards and prize packages for award winners.

“The Committee has a three-week tenure, beginning Monday, July 25, 2022, and it is expected to submit its recommendations to the National Executive of the GJA on or before Monday, August 15, 2022,” the statement said.

“This year’s Awards ceremony will take place in November,” Mr Dwumfour announced, and urged members to accord the Committee the needed support to ensure the success of the task assigned to it.
