Developing Emotional Intelligence is critical to peaceful coexistence—Registrar

Effia (WR), July 27, GNA – Emotional Intelligence has been touted as key ingredient for star performance, positive relationship building and the overall peaceful coexistence with one another.

Dr Moses MacLean Abnory, the Registrar of the Takoradi Technical University (TTU), delivering the first public lecture organised the University on the theme, “Emotional Intelligence: Myth or Reality” said emotional intelligence was even more critical to enhance better decision making and spur development at all levels.

He wondered the staggering statistics of mental illness, rape, defilement and divorce cases in the country from the census figures and noted the place of emotional intelligence as panacea to curb social ills and create a better and harmonious society.

The Registrar queried: “So why are intellectuals in emotional intelligence related crimes, why the failing academic performance among students, why spousal abuse and killings and other forms of harmful punishment?… Society is gradually looking out on emotional intelligence, and we must revert to it now.”

Dr. Abnory said the developmental trends in the current dispensation even made emotional intelligence a subject that must be discussed and appreciated by all.

Emotional intelligence meant one’s ability to understand one’s own impact on others and how to deal with other people’s ways of thinking.

It also enabled people to improve upon their emotional self-awareness, expression, originality, increased forbearance, confidence and reality intelligence

Though conflict, anger and disagreement were inevitable in any human endeavour, the proper and prudent management of these situations, according to Dr Abnory, could only be achieved through emotional intelligence.

Meanwhile, this critical virtue and value of managing one’s own emotions in a positive way to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathise with others and overcome challenges as well as defusing conflict had eluded many.

Dr Abnory also revealed the correlation between emotional intelligence and success, adding that, the latter was a determinant of positive human relations and ultimately fostering teamwork and successful living and relationships.

He recommended that families, institutions, corporate institutions restructure practices and organisational values to include emotional intelligence as a critical parameter.

Dr Abnory concluded that the goal of all and sundry should be focused and as well as embrace emotional intelligence, the fiber of society.

Dr Kumi Boateng from the UMAT applauded the steadfastness of the Takoradi Technical University to lead in the development drive adding, “you have proven your commitment to achieve greater height as a university.

He said the subject of emotional intelligence was a critical global issue, thus, the need to be exposed to such knowledge to help remold lives, institutions for the general wellbeing of society.

Professor John Frank Eshun, the Vice Chancellor of the Technical University said the Public Lecture formed part of the objective of the five-year Strategic Plan, to improve upon its visibility and corporate image.

He added that the public lecture would set the pace for a series of lectures to be organized by the University, adding that the school intend to leverage on the expertise of professors to address the myriads of socio-economics issues confronting the region and the country as whole.
