COLA: Government appeals to Teacher Unions to call off industrial action

Accra, July 8, GNA – The Government on Friday appealed to Teacher Unions to call off their industrial action as negotiations continue on their demand for a 20 per cent Cost-of-Living Allowance (COLA).

A statement was issued by Mr Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, at the end of an emergency meeting held in Accra between the Government and Organised Labour.

The Government was represented by the Ministers of Employment and Labour Relations, Finance, Education and National Security on one hand and organised labour on the other.

The statement said the Government had taken note of the demand by organised labour for 20 per cent COLA in the light of the current economic conditions prevailing in the country.

It reiterated that the Government was committed to engaging Organised Labour to find a lasting solution to the issue.

In the light of the foregoing, the parties had resolved to reconvene on Tuesday, 12th July, at 1400 hours, to begin negotiations on demand by Organised Labour, the statement added.
