Sofia, July 31,BTA /GNA – Bulgarian President Rumen Radev awarded a presidential badge of honour to David Harris, CEO of the American Jewish Committee, at a ceremony at the Presidency on Sunday.
This was announced by the presidential press secretariat.
The award recognizes David Harris’ outstanding contribution to the development of friendly ties between the Bulgarian and Jewish peoples, the strengthening of democratic values, the protection of human rights, as well as the fight against anti-Semitism and all forms of discrimination.
In his address, Radev said that Harris, who had headed the American Jewish Committee for more than 30 years had dedicated his life to the advancement of the mission of the organization to fight anti-Semitism all over the world, counter extremism, radicalism, discrimination and hate speech in the protection of human rights.
Radev noted Harris’ personal contribution to the popularization of “the unprecedented historical act of rescuing of nearly 50,000 Bulgarian Jews during World War Two”.
The President also noted that the American Jewish Committee helped expand the cooperation between Bulgaria and the United States and also that the committee opened its sixth European office in the Bulgarian capital Sofia.
