6th Ghana Energy Awards focuses on Energy Transition

Accra, July 19, GNA – The 6th edition of the Ghana Energy Awards (GEA) will honour individuals and organisations whose innovations are contributing to Ghana’s energy transition efforts and global decarbonisation, organisers of the event have said.

The organisers, the Energy Media Group, have consequently introduced five new categories in this year’s edition, which will be on the theme: “Global decarbonisation: A just and equitable transition in Ghana.”

The new categories are: Visionary Leadership Award, Eco-Innovation Business Award, Outstanding Energy Management Award, Novel Deployment of RE Technology Award, and Sustainable Energy Partnership of the Year.

Speaking at the official opening of nominations in Accra, Mr Kwame Jantuah, Chairman of the Awards Committee, said the focus for this year’s event aligned with the Ministry of Energy’s Energy Transition Policy.

He said the theme reflected world events and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s presentation at the COP 26, where he indicated that: “We will combat climate change, but protect Ghana’s development,” and emphasised the need to strike a balance between social, economic and environmental imperatives.

Mr Jantuah said nominations has opened and will end on October 18, 2022.

“It is pretty obvious that this year’s theme seeks to generate answers to the challenges faced in the sector and we are convinced that as always, our companies in this industry will leave up to expectation as they have always done,” he said.

Ghana has made a determined effort to phase out fossil fuels and transition to renewable energy.

Currently, about 70% of Ghana’s generation installed capacity of 5,321MW is from a thermal plant that uses natural gas as its primary fuel.

The Ministry of Energy has set up the National Energy Transition Committee (NETC), whose aim is to develop a national energy transition policy.

Mr Henry Teinor, the Event Director of the GEA, urged all players in the energy sector to participate in the various categories of the awards.
