Tema, June 04, GNA – The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Tema Regional Command has conducted a simulation exercise at the Nicolas Plaza, in the Tema Metropolis on how to rescue individuals trapped in tall buildings in case of a fire outbreak.
The exercise forms part of the Tema GNFS Command’s 2022 National Fire Safety week campaign, which was on the general theme: “Safer environment; the way to invest.”
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Tema after the stimulation exercises, the Tema GNFS Deputy Regional Commander, Divisional Officer Grade I (DOI) Franklin Masiku stated it was to showcase how the GNFS responded to calls from individuals by using the turntable truck and the pumper truck simultaneously in case of fire outbreak in tall buildings.
He highlighted that while the pumper truck doused the fire, the turntable truck which had a ladder of 125 feet tall was mounted to rescue individuals trapped in the tall building.
He said thereafter the rescued victims who might have demonstrated any health concerns would be rushed to the hospital by the ambulance for treatment.
DOI Masiku said the Tema GNFS would still intensify educating the public and property owners, especially those within tall buildings to quickly call on the fire service in case of any fire incidents at their premises.
DO III Ebenezer Yenzu, the Tema Regional Public Relations Officer, entreated property owners and the public that when putting up a building they should make way for access in case of emergencies.
The PRO cautioned that where there was a fire outbreak in tall buildings, the victims should use the building’s staircase to escape but not the elevators because they might get trapped.
He said people should adhere to parking lots provided to them by securities because wrongful parking also delayed their work as it hindered easy passage to respond to fire cases.
He added that when there was an emergency and the public heard the siren, they should pave the way so that emergencies could be attended to.
The PRO mentioned 192 or 112 as the emergency numbers that could be contacted adding that the main contact line for Tema GNFS was +233291702001 when there was a fire outbreak within the metropolis.
He cautioned the public against prank calls to the GNFS.
