Accra, June 14, GNA – The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has indicated that it will constitute a five-member committee to probe the Islamic Senior High School shooting incident.
The NUGS, in a press release sighted by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) and signed by Dennis Appiah Larbi-Ampofo, its President, said it would constitute a committee to look into the matter and advise the body accordingly.
The statement added that they would also write to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education to probe the incident.
The Union said it trusted the investigative unit of the Ghana Police Service to “swiftly” probe the incident.
“That notwithstanding, we may have the patience for full report and details but we may not have patience on anything that threatens the safety and security of our students,” they added.
The Union entreated the affected students to remain calm and resolute as they looked into the matter.
“In the meantime, the President of the Union will lead a delegation to the school to ascertain wholly, the substance of the matter. While we take bold steps to defend our students we urge all affected students to remain calm,” they noted.
More than 25 students of the Islamic SHS were hospitalised on Monday, June 13, 2022, following a clash between demonstrating students and a crowd-control Police team.
The incident was triggered by the decision of some aggrieved students to block a section of the main Abrepo Junction-Berekese road, in protest of what they described as the frequent vehicular knockdowns in front the school.
Information gathered by the GNA indicates that just when the students blocked the road, a team of Police personnel detailed from the Ashanti Regional Police Command stormed the area, and allegedly sprayed tear gas on the demonstrating students.
