Sofia, June 27, (BTA/GNA) – For the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, 3,082 flights over Bulgaria were serviced on Sunday, without delays, the Air Traffic Control Authority BULATSA said on Monday. After the lifting of passenger restrictions, the number of flights in the second quarter of 2022 increased dramatically. Traffic levels range between 85-95% on a daily basis compared to the number of flights in 2019, reaching up to 98% on weekends. So far, there have been single instances recorded where 100% of 2019’s respective day levels have been exceeded.
Air traffic over Bulgaria is expected to continue to resume previous levels, with a certain shift to the west and certain concentration in central routes because of the war in Ukraine, BULATSA pointed out.
The duration of the conflict, fuel prices and their impact on world economy, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic, are also key to future developments. Airport and carriers’ capacity to cope with peak demand, for flights are being cancelled due to lack of staff at both. BULATSA’s air traffic controllers are prepared for the increased traffic and all measures have been taken for the safe handling of flights. The expected highest values are in July and August, the authority said.
