Kpetoe (V/R), June 11, GNA – The National Tree Planting exercise dubbed ‘Green Ghana Project’ has been marked in the Agotime-Ziope district at a brief ceremony.
The exercise, which aims at planting more trees, is on the theme of “Mobilising for a Greener Future.”
Mr Darlington Nutor Dodzi, the Presiding Member, Mr Francis Seglah, the District Director of Agriculture, Mr Tordey Gershon Amaglo, the Regional Customer Service officer of Forestry Commission, Mr David Besah,, the Education Director, Mr M. K. Joshua, the District Coordinating Director, other heads of department as well as students from the various schools within the district participated in the exercise.
Madam Emelia Emefa Adzimah, Chief Executive of Agotime-Ziope urged all and sundry to take the exercise seriously and plant more trees to protect the environment that is fast being degraded.
She said some 2,000 seedlings had been received from the Forestry Commission and there were plans to top-up depending on the response from the people.
Madam Adzimah entreated the schools to inculcate the culture of tree planting into students, saying, that would be the surest way of bridging the deficit of trees in the country.
She assured the Forestry Commission that the district would protect the trees and plant more to protect the environment.
Teak, Mango and cedar seedlings were planted.
10 million trees are expected to be planted in forest reserves and the same quantity planted across the country, according to Mr Samuel Abu Jinapor, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources.
He said the country had lost about 80 per cent of its forest cover due to many factors including Climate change and noted “We have reached a tipping point.”
