Police puzzled after major cheese heist at German motorway rest stop

Frankfurt, May 30, (dpa/GNA) – A total of 230 kilogrammes of cheese, was stolen from a lorry parked at a motorway rest stop in the western German state of Saarland, over the course of two days.

The culprits managed to make off with a total of 15 bulk packs of Edam cheese, between Saturday evening and Monday morning, police said on Monday.

The thieves first removed a plastic seal from the trailer, and then opened the unlocked cargo area flap, gaining access to the cheese, police said.

It remains unclear how they managed to cart off the huge haul unnoticed.

Police initially were unable to say how much the stolen product was worth.

The lorry was parked at a rest stop in Nohfelden, at the A62 motorway heading towards the city of Kaiserslautern. On Sundays, lorries heavier than 7.5 tonnes are not allowed on motorways in Germany, therefore they are often forced to interrupt their journeys and park at rest stops.
