Kumasi, May 24, GNA – The Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA) has handed over start-up kits to some 630 youth in Ashanti after completing various apprenticeship and entrepreneurship programmes.

They received machines and accessories for successfully completing their training in sewing, welding, wig making, make-up, fashion and designing among other handiwork.

It was done under the GEA/MasterCard Young Africa Works Project targeted at entrepreneurship development and employment, especially for young women in Ghana.

Mrs Kosi Yankey-Ayeh, the Chief Executive Officer, GEA, speaking at separate ceremonies in the Ashanti Region for the graduation and distribution of the start-up kits to the beneficiaries, said the main focus was to motivate the trainees to create jobs and employ others.

That was why the GEA, in the last few years, had trained more than 8,000 youth in Ghana under the Apprenticeship Entrepreneurship Component.

Mrs Yankey-Ayeh said the move, which was also in line with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s agenda to create employment and wealth, had ensured the successful training of about 27,000 people in other innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship programmes.

She said the beneficiaries underwent between 12 to 18 months training from a skilled craftsperson, depending on the trade under study.

The GEA has more than 200 Business Advisory Centers (BACs) and 37 Business Resource Centers (BRCs), which continued to monitor the activities of those apprentices and entrepreneurs.

The Agency had been providing training and skills development to the BACs and BRCs to serve as a tool for monitoring and capacity building with the aim of localising GEAs mandate for easy monitoring and follow-ups, Mrs Yankey-Ayeh said.

Ghana was working hard to build capacities of the youth and create employment as part of efforts to build a stronger economy, she said, adding that there were other jobs and skills projects in the pipeline soon to be out-doored to complement that vision.

Mr Simon Osei-Mensah, the Ashanti Regional Minister, encouraged the youth to embrace entrepreneurship with passion.

“The youth should work with the acquired skills and better their lives to reduce the unemployment rate in Ghana,” he said, and that the growth of most countries had been the result of skilled labour.

The ceremonies were held in Kumasi, Konongo and Asante-Mampong.
