Local communities must take part in voluntary activities—Red Cross

Accra, May 13, GNA — The Ghana Red Cross Society has entreated local communities to take part in voluntary activities to address relevant local challenges.

The Society said this in a statement signed by Dr Edward Donkor, National Health Advisor, Red Cross, copied to the Ghana News Agency after it made a donation of non- food items (hygiene kits) to two hundred and fifty families displaced at the Apiatse community in the Western Region, to mark this year’s World Red Cross Day.

The donation was made with support from the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC).

Donated items include a cash transfer donation of GH¢376,000.00, 400 hygiene kits, 540 dignity kits and used clothes.

The statement said it was also working on 250 dignity kits, 200 hygiene kits and 100 pieces of mosquito nets to be delivered to 250 displaced people.

It said May 8 marked a very important day in the history of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Society in the world because it was a day to celebrate the uniqueness and unity of International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

The statement said the theme for this year’s celebration was: “Be Human Kind,” and encouraged people in local communities to show kindness to all manner of persons.

The Ghana Red Cross Society is a volunteer based humanitarian organisation and an auxiliary to government.

The society continuous to support the government’s efforts in the areas of social interventions ( eg distribution of food packs, emergency response, health education, social mobilization, risk communication, media sensitisation, community engagement and Water Sanitation and Hygiene Project -Ghana-WASH) in communities.

During World Red Cross Day, local heroes that made an invaluable impact on life protection are recognized in various categories such as law enforcement, military, fire and rescue.

The statement encouraged citizens to use the occasion to support the needy and treat all people with hospitality, dignity, and humanity.

World Red Cross Day is an international day dedicated to alleviating human suffering, upholding human dignity, protecting life, and preventing emergencies and natural disasters such as flood, epidemics, and earthquakes.

The fundamental principles recognized during World Red Cross Day are impartiality, humanity, independence, neutrality, voluntary, universality, and unity.

The Day is also meant to inspire, facilitate, and promote all humanitarian activities carried out by the ICRC and national societies.

It is also a Day members of the International Red Cross Movement raises the need in assisting suffering people.

People are reminded of the need to protect their lives as well as the dignity of the victims of any armed conflicts and all situations of violence.
