Swedruman Council announces death of Nana Botwe, Swedruhene

Agona Swedru, April 3, GNA – The Swedruman Council of Chiefs has officially announced the death of Nana Asiedu Kobena Botwe II, Chief of Agona Swedru, who reigned for decades.

Nana Botwe, who was also the Adontenhene of Nyakrom Traditional Area, reportedly died six months ago but was kept from the public due to the customary norms of the chiefs and the people of the area.

Nana Kweku Esieni I, the Acting chief of Agona Swedru, broke the sad news to residents of the Municipality at a council meeting at Swedru in the Agona West Municipality of the Central region.

He said the Council members had officially informed Okofo Katakyi Nyakoh Eku X, Omanhene of Nyakrom Traditional Area, about the death of the Swedruhene.

Nana Esieni, also the Nifahene of Swedru, said based on the information sent to the Omanhene of Nyakrom Traditional Area, he had been granted permission to act as the president of the Swedruman Council of Chiefs and to announce the demise of Nana Botwe to Agonaman residents, both home and abroad.

He said the chief of Swedru fell ill last year and sent for medical treatment but did not recover.

Directives had been given by the Overlord of Agonaman, Katakyi Nyakoh Eku, to consult the head of Nana Botwe’s family to form a committee to plan the 40th week celebration of the late chief and subsequently fix a date for his final funeral rites.

Nana Esieni called on the inhabitants of the Municipality to comport themselves and refrain from acts that could spark chaos.

He said the people of Agona Swedru were peace loving and cautioned those who would take advantage of the demise of the chief to cause mayhem to desist from it to ensure a smooth 40th week celebration and the final funeral rites.

To signify that the Overlord of Swedru was not among them, Okyeame Kobena Mensah poured libation, hoisted a red flag in front of the main entrance of the Palace and finally overturned the stool that was used by the chief to signify he had joined his ancestors.
