Boost for EU budget proposed to help people fleeing Ukraine war

Brussels, April 22, (dpa/GNA) – The European Commission is proposing extra cash for the EU’s 2022 budget, to ensure continued support for people escaping from the war in Ukraine.

The funds are to help the most affected EU member states shelter people “fleeing Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine,” said EU Budget Commissioner Johannes Hahn.

The EU executive announced payments worth €176 million ($190 million) to the 2022 EU budget, along with commitments for future funding totalling nearly €100 million. Together with available redirected funds, the extra finance amounts to €400 million.

The budget adjustment sees extra cash directed towards the migration systems of EU member states, to help with the process of arrivals from Ukraine and to boost funds for humanitarian aid. The European Parliament and the 27 EU member states must approve the budget changes before the extra finances are made available.
