Warsaw, April 25, (dpa/GNA) – Russia is coming up short in its attempts to conquer Ukraine, says US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
“When it comes to Russia’s war aims, Russia is failing, Ukraine is succeeding,” he said, speaking in Poland after a three-hour visit to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the day before with US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin.
Blinken said Russia’s goal is to strip Ukraine of its sovereignty and independence, but noted that it had not been able to do so, despite more than two months of gruelling attacks. He added that Russia’s military has not performed to expectations, and the country’s economy has been pounded by Western sanctions.
“We don’t know how the rest of this war will unfold, but we do know that a sovereign independent Ukraine will be around a lot longer than Vladimir Putin is on the scene.”
