Accra, March 10, GNA – Mr Prince Bagnaba Mba, President of Forum for Equity a human rights Non-governmental organisation has called on the Auditor General to implement the policy of accountability on public property.
That, he said would reduce the wastage on government property and misuse of the taxpayer’s money
Mr Mba who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Thursday said the careless abandoning of public property in the public sector was disturbing.
“If one takes a cursory look and inventory of logistics and office general equipment within the public and civil services, it shows a clear case of waste attitude which has caused a lot of financial loss to the state.
“There’s too much leakages and abandoned vehicles because of minor mechanical damages which could easily be rectified ,but abandoned because of administrative bottlenecks
“From the national headquarters to the district assemblies ,we see pickups, trucks, buses rotting away, only to be sold out as scraps. “
He said the external audit from the Auditor General should as a matter of state policy enforce the principle of accountability every quarter of the year before the release of funds for the subsequent quarter.
Mr Mba said it was ironical and interesting when the parliamentary committee for public finance sit in public to go through past four years expenditures,
“Some very important parts from the sea of broken down vehicles could be fixed and used to maintain and resuscitate others. “.
He said it would be in the best interest to conduct a national survey and recovery of public transport.
