Stuttgart, Mar. 2, (dpa/GNA) – Luxury carmaker Porsche became the latest German manufacturer to announce a temporary pause in production, as the Ukraine conflict started to hit supply chains for Germany’s vast car industry.
From Wednesday afternoon, Porsche’s factory in Leipzig would have to stop production, a spokesperson said, at least until the end of next week. Some 2,500 staff would be transferred to “short-time work,” a government furlough scheme.
“We will plan ahead as far as we can and assess the situation on an ongoing basis … The Volkswagen Group is watching the events in Ukraine with great concern and dismay,” the spokesperson said.
The Volkswagen Group – Porsche’s parent company – announced on Tuesday that production at its main VW site in Wolfsburg would have to stop because of supply problems due to the war in Ukraine.
Its plants in the German state of Saxony were already affected by a lack of cables.
BMW also revealed on Tuesday that production would be interrupted in German and European plants due to supply bottlenecks. Where, when and for how long production will be interrupted is still being examined, a spokesperson said.
