DCE urges property owners to roof buildings to meet best standards

Assin Bereku (C/R), March 1, GNA-The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Assin North District, Mr Charles Ohene Andoh, has admonished property owners to roof their buildings to meet best practices to forestall any calamity during rainstorms.

He made the comments against the backdrop of a heavy torrential rainfall that hit the Assin Anwiasu community, destroying properties running into millions of Ghana Cedis.

The downpour destroyed and ripped off roofs of more than 70 households as well as a palace, mosque and school building.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, the DCE, expressed dissatisfaction with how buildings in the district were roofed, some having only cement blocks placed on top of the roof without the required nails.

This, he noted, must be treated with the utmost attention because ripped off roofs during storms could injure and maim people.

The DCE disclosed that assessment by the district National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) officials after the heavy downpour indicated that unauthorised structures, bad roofing and building along waterways were some challenges hindering the development and growth of Assinman.

He has, therefore, directed the NADMO officials to be firm and discharge their core mandate without favour and stop any structure that could cause artificial disaster from continuation.

Meanwhile, NADMO has presented quantities of relief items to victims who were hit by the rainstorm.
