Munich, March 28, (dpa.GNA) – With the war still raging in Ukraine, a construction minister in Germany’s Bavaria has called for the construction of more secure underground bunkers.
Bavarian Construction Minister, Christian Bernreiter, argued for more investment in underground spaces that can also be used as shelters in the event of a conflict.
“There were once considerable subsidies for underground car parks that were developed as secure facilities in the event of a conflict. This must now be intensively discussed again,” the conservative politician told the Bild tabloid on Monday.
In the state of Bavaria, he said, there were currently 150 such shelters. Some 300 others had been converted for other uses since 2007, he said, and it wasn’t certain they could be converted back into safety bunkers if necessary.
“We thought we lived in a better world. Nobody expected a war like this on European soil,” Bernreiter said. Germans all thought bunkers were no longer necessary but “reality is now catching up with us again,” he said.
