Ada Songor Lagoon Association launched

Ada, March 10, GNA — The Ada Songor Lagoon Association, based in the Ada East and West District in the Greater Accra Region, has been officially launched to protect the heritage and livelihood of the people of Ada.

Members of the association include chiefs and traditional leaders as well as people in communities of the Ada Songhor Lagoon enclave, with a common aim to fight the lease of the Songor Lagoon.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, during the launch at Toflokpo near Sege, a salt mining community close to the Ada Songhor Lagoon, Nene Mayilo Dadeboom Anim II, who is the chairman of the association said its aim is to fight the lease of the lagoon.

Nene Anim who is also the Chief of Toflokpo, said they will seek justice on behalf of the chiefs and people of Ada who, he said “have been tortured in their quest to protect the Ada Songhor Lagoon.”

Nene Anim advised the public to disassociate itself from the allegation that the chiefs are fighting in the interest of some minor groups who operate pans in the Songhor Lagoon, adding that, “that is not true; and we must be careful from such lies.”

Mr Lawrence Katey Nunekpeku, an Assembly Member for Ajumanikopey Electoral Area and a member of the association said a master plan for the Songhor Lagoon mandates that the shores of the lagoon should be reserved for the people for salt crystallization hence the fight is for everybody and not those who operate individual pans.

The launching of the association was graced by traditional leaders, Christian leaders, and a cross section of the public which was climaxed with a series of traditional and religious performances.
