Kiev, Feb 26 (dpa/GNA) – Residents of the Ukrainian capital were being told to hunker down and take precautions, after street fighting broke out overnight with the invading Russian forces.
“Fighting is now going on in the streets of our city. We ask to remain calm and exercise maximum caution!” an early Saturday statement from city authorities said.
Those who are already in bunkers, basements and other underground shelters should stay there, it said, adding that people who have not yet moved to such a location should consider doing so.
It published a map of places where residents could seek protection.
“If you are at home, do not go to the window, do not go to the balconies.”
Intense gunfire and explosions were heard overnight in Kiev.
Kiev has imposed a curfew from 10 pm to 7 am, a move that other Ukrainian cities have implemented as well.
