Sunyani, Jan. 20, GNA – Zoomlion Ghana Limited has begun disinfection and fumigation exercise at the Sunyani Airport, as contractors working on the rehabilitation and expansion of the airport put finishing touches for flights to resume.
According to Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, the Bono Regional Minister, the Regional Coordinating Council and the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) had engaged the waste management and sanitation firm to undertake the disinfection and fumigation exercise.
During an inspection visit to the airport, Mad Owusu-Banahene said she was highly impressed about the level of work done so far, and expressed the hope the contractors would speed up to meet the deadline.
Though the contractors were not met on site, work on the rehabilitation and expansion of the airport was steadily progressing.
Mad Owusu-Banahene said the project was about 95 percent complete, with minor works to be done on the runway, indicating that project was expected to be completed by February for flight to resume in March, this year.
Mr Ernest Osei Brenya, the Bono Regional Pest Control Officer of Zoomlion, who led the disinfection and fumigation exercises, later told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) the exercises would be conducted periodically.
He explained that because the facility was abandoned for some time, it could be breeding grounds for pests, reptiles and rodents, hence the need for the exercise.
Mr Brenya said the COVID-19 pandemic had necessitated the importance to keep the premises of the Airport clean at all times, to expose users to avoidable dangers.
The Sunyani Airport was originally constructed as an Airstrip and later upgraded into an airport in 1969 and currently has a total runway length of about 1,520.
In 2015, the GACL and the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) shut down the airport as a precautionary measure to forestall any disaster.
