Yilo-Krobo MP refurbishes Apersua Basic School
GES takes over Apersua Basic School after MP’s renovation
Apersua (ER), Jan 20, GNA-Mr Albert Nyakotey, Member of Parliament for Yilo-Krobo Constituency, has refurbished Apersua M/A Basic School and handed it over to the Ghana Education Service (GES) after it was destroyed by a rainstorm.
The MP’s intervention followed a devastating rainstorm that ripped-up the roofing sheets of the school in 2013, displacing both school children and teachers.
The situation frustrated teachers, children and parents as the teaching and learning process was disrupted in the community.
Highlighting challenges that school authorities had to endure within the period, Mrs Diana Teye Korleki, Headmistress of the School the deplorable state of the school distressed the community, while teaching and learning became ineffective, until the MP came to their aid with the roofing of the block, bringing back school activities to normalcy.
In addition to the refurbishment, the MP built a new Kindergarten block to house children at the pre-school level.
Mrs Veronica Tetteh, Yilo-Krobo Municipal Director of Education, also described the school’s situation at the time as poor, which influenced their appeal to the MP for help.
Like ‘Oliver Twist’, she appealed to the MP for furniture for the new kindergarten block, and also advised both teachers and community members to exercise maintenance culture by keeping it tidy at all times.
Mr Emmanuel Padi, School Management Committee Chairman, also appealed to the MCE, MP and Education Director to help the school to be enrolled on the Ghana school feeding programme.
He called for a Junior High School block and ICT laboratory, saying the community had only one basic school and the students had to trek to other towns to access JHS.
“As a result, some children may not be able to continue school due to problems with transport fare and poor road network,” he added.
Mr Eric Tetteh, Yilo-Krobo Municipal Chief Executive, distributed uniforms to the schoolchildren.
He told the GNA in an interview that the assembly had made provision for JHS block, but added it would be this year, saying, “The municipal assembly needs to plan before moving ahead with the construction.”
He urged the community to be patient, and that projects sometimes needed Non-governmental organizations’ support.
The MP said education was his priority and urged the community not to be hesitant to approach him with their needs for consideration and redress.
“I also benefited from education, it’s made me who I am now and I feel proud to offer this support for the children and the community to make them happy,” he added.
