Two injured and several homes damaged after Indonesian quake

Jakarta, Jan 10, (dpa/GNA) – Two people were injured and more than 60 homes were damaged after a magnitude-5.5 earthquake rocked Indonesia’s Halmahera island on Monday, the country’s disaster management agency said.

Residents in North Halmahera district rushed out of their homes after the quake struck in the early morning, said Abdul Muhari, spokesperson for the National Disaster Management Agency.

There was no tsunami warning.

“There’s an urgent need for tents to shelter displaced people,” Muhari said.

Like many areas in the Indonesian archipelago, the Molucca Islands, of which Halmahera is part, are prone to earthquakes.
