TMA and Zoomlion to begin door-to-door refuse collection

Tema, Jan. 31, GNA – The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) and the Zoomlion Company are to begin door-to-door refuse collection in Tema Manhean as part of measures to improve waste management in the area.

Tema Manhean with its dense population, has just a handful communal refuse bins, placed at selected points and this has not been helpful to efforts at keeping the area clean.

Mr. Frank Asante, the TMA Public Relations Officer, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency in an interview said refuse polythene bags would be supplied to residents to put in their garbage.

Tricycles would then go to the houses to collect and this would not attract any additional fee as the service charge would be part of the cost of the polybags.

He said the door-to-door waste collection in Tema Manhean, had become necessary as this was the new normal in all the other communities in the Metropolis.

The Assembly, he said, had identified four places, where the residents had turned into unauthorized dumping sites.

These are Bankuman, behind the VALCO fence wall, West Africa Gas Pipeline area, and the VALCO hospital vicinity and these huge pile of uncollected refuse is now been removed as part of the ‘Clean Your Frontage’ campaign.

Mr. Asante warned the residents to stop dumping refuse at those places, adding that offenders would be punished.

He said sensitization had been done and was still ongoing on the introduction of the door-to-door collection and the ‘Operation Clean Your Frontage’ campaign.
