Heads of State-Owned Agencies commiserate with Appiatse victims

Apiatse (W/R), Jan. 25, GNA – A delegation of heads of State-Owned Agencies, led by the Director-General of State Interests Governance and Authority (SIGA), Mr Edward Boateng, has visited Appiatse to commiserate with the bereaved families and injured and to assist the community with relief items.

The team was made up of Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of the State Housing Company (SHC), Volta River Authority (VRA), Coastal Development Authority, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), National Lotteries Authority (NLA) and Minerals Development Fund.
Others are Management Development and Productivity Institute (MDPI); and Ghana Libyan Arab Holding Company Limited (GLAHCO).

The Appiatse Community was on Thursday, January 20, 2022, hit by a tragic explosion involving a truck carrying mining explosives, which claimed 14 lives, injured 179 and rendered hundreds homeless.

The police are investigating the cause of the explosion.

At a brief meeting with community leaders, Mr Boateng said, “This is a national crisis and in fulfilment of the Government pledge announced by the Vice President, we have come to assess the level of destruction to know what support will be required from us.”

“As leaders who understand the importance of giving back to society, we came here today to have first-hand information to enable us to provide the necessary support for the community that has unfortunately been affected,” he added.

For his part, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Dr Isaac Dasamani, explained the impact of the disaster to the CEOs and said the people of Appiatse had indeed suffered a catastrophe.

He expressed gratitude to the Government, Corporate institutions and private individuals, including Ghana Gas, Ghana Chamber of Mines, Goldfields and the First Lady, among others, who had supported with relief items.
