Chief eyes gold in World Schools Chess Championship in Panama.

Accra, Jan. 29, GNA – A nine-year old Dave Chief Quansah Acheampong has set sights on winning gold in the 2022 World Schools Chess Championship in Panama in June.

Nine-year Chief, excelled in the seven-day African Schools Individual Chess Championships, which was held at Pride Inn, Azure Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya.

Ghana was also represented by Jeshurun Obiri Nana Yeboah, who won gold and Jedidiah Nana Osei Acheampong, silver medalist, in the under 7 open, Mawutor Richardson under 11 open and Mawuli Richardson in the under 13 open, who also won gold, in the event.

Dave Quansah defended the title he won in 2020 and eyes gold at the world stage.

He repeated such an incredible fighting and winning spirit in the 2021 edition as he recorded solid wins in every single game with a perfect score of nine out of nine points. He faced off with strong opponents from Kenya, South Africa, Uganda, Nigeria and Zimbabwe, to emerge winner again.

For this win, Chief get the norm for the title, Candidate Master in chess and he qualifies to represent Africa in the Under 9 category in the World Championship.

Chief Quansah Acheampong’s dad, Mr David Acheampong, told the GNA Sports he was proud of the Ghanaian Junior players’ achievement and added that there is so much potential here that needs to be harnessed and opportunity for Ghana to win more laurels.

He expressed his gratitude to the Ghana Chess Association and the Ministry of Youth and Sports for their support of the team.

He added that the team needed sponsorship, so will be grateful if individuals and corporate bodies support them as they train and prepare to fly the flag of Ghana in the world event.
