Brazil’s President released from hospital

Rio de Janeiro, Jan 5, (dpa/GNA) – Brazilian President, Jair Bolsonaro, was released from hospital on Wednesday after a stay of two days.

The 66-year-old was taken to a hospital in Sao Paulo on Monday, for treatment of an intestinal blockage.

The right-wing populist politician posted a photo on Twitter showing him together with his doctors. They are all giving him a thumbs up.

According to the government, no surgical intervention was necessary.

Bolsonaro was also treated in hospital for an intestinal blockage in July last year.

He says the problems are the result of wounds he sustained during a knife attack during the 2018 election campaign. At the time, a mentally disturbed man had stabbed him and inflicted severe abdominal injuries. Bolsonaro had to undergo several operations.

Presidential elections are due in Brazil in October, with Bolsonaro running for a second term.

He has been a controversial head of state, and was recently criticized for not interrupting his holiday, despite severe flooding in the state of Bahia.
