Adizatu Sulemana wins Best Player Award as Black Sticks Ladies grab silver at Hockey AFCON

Accra, Jan 24, GNA – Ghanaian defender, Adizatu Sulemana, was adjudged the best player at the just ended Hockey Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) played at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium in Accra.

Adiza, as she is mostly called by her peers, plies her trade with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) female hockey team, Royal Ladies and was phenomenal throughout Ghana’s campaign in the competition.

She began her hockey career in 2014 when she played for Amazing Grace Hockey Club and received her first national team call before joining GRA in 2016.

She has represented the country and club in both local and international tournaments including the Commonwealth Games, World League and continental championships.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s hopes of hosting and winning the tournament was once again dashed as South Africa continued their dominance in Africa.

The Black Sticks Ladies lost 3-1 to the South Africans after Ghana scored first in the 13th minute of the first quarter through a penalty from the stick of Elizabeth Opoku.

Ghana is yet to find an antidote in stopping the South Africans as they are always overpowered by them in any competition.

In the men’s division, South Africa men also defeated Egypt 3-1 on penalties after their game ended 1-1.

The Ghana male team, unfortunately could not make it to the medal zone of the tournament.

South Africa Ladies per their win has qualified to represent Africa at the International Hockey Federation (FIH) World Cup to be played in Spain and Netherlands later in the year while the men also represent Africa in the same competition to be hosted in India next year.
