Life sentence for man who rammed German carnival crowd

Kassel, Germany, Dec 16, (dpa/GNA) – A German court sentenced a 31-year-old man to life in prison on 89 counts of attempted murder, on Thursday for steering his vehicle into a crowd of Carnival celebrants last year, near the central city of Kassel.

The Kassel regional court found the German man guilty of 88 counts of attempted murder, in combination with dangerous bodily harm and one count of attempted murder and dangerous interference with traffic.

The court found he had deliberately driven the vehicle into the Rose Monday parade on February 24, 2020, injuring at least 88 people, including 26 children, some of them seriously, in the town of Volkmarsen.

It remains unclear why he did so, as the accused maintained his silence during the proceedings.
