Accra, Dec. 15, GNA – Ghana’s men and women Hockey team, nicknamed the “Black Sticks” will be participating in the Hockey Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) scheduled to take place at Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium in Accra.
The tournament, which pushes-off from January 17 to January 23, 2022, would serve as a qualifying event for the 2022 Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham, England.
The men’s team would be in Pool B together with two-time winners, Egypt, as well as Nigeria and Uganda.
Ghana’s men’s team open their campaign against Uganda on January 17 and later come up against Egypt the next day while finishing the group matches with rivals Nigeria on January 19, 2022.
South Africa would begin their title defense in Group A as they come up against Kenya and Namibia.
In the women’s competition, Ghana’s women’s team who were finalists at the tournaments four years ago would come up against Kenya, Nigeria and Zambia.
The Black Sticks open their campaign against rivals Nigeria on January 17 with Kenya being their second group opponents and will finish off against Zambia.
South Africa’s women’s team who beat Ghana to the trophy in the last competition are in Pool A with the likes of Namibia, Zimbabwe and Uganda.
