Washington, Dec 6 (dpa/GNA) – US President Joe Biden has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff outside public buildings in Washington, following the death of veteran Republican politician Bob Dole.
Dole, a long-time US senator from Kansas who ran for president in 1996 against Bill Clinton, died on Sunday at the age of 98.
In a proclamation issued in Washington, Biden called Dole “a statesman like few in our history and a war hero among the greatest of the Greatest Generation.”
The US flag will be at half-staff at the White House and all public buildings and grounds, military posts and naval stations and all naval vessels in the US and its territories abroad until sunset on December Thursday.
The Stars and Stripes are also to be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all US embassies, consular offices and other facilities abroad, including military facilities and naval vessels and stations.
Dole, who fought in World War Two, represented Kansas in the US Senate from 1969 to 1996.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, a former North Carolina Senator and Transportation Secretary, and by their daughter Robin.
