Cameroon’s AFCON hosting hangs in the balance

Yaounde, Dec 20, (dpa/GNA) – It is still unclear whether Cameroon will host the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in January, after African football chief Patrice Motsepe failed to make a clear-cut statement on the issue.

“We will talk tomorrow and give you feedback,” Motsepe told reporters on arrival at Nsimalen International Airport.

Motsepe is visiting Cameroon to discuss the much-delayed tournament with the country’s football authorities, as well as President Paul Biya. It is due to take place January 9 to February 6.

The end of the Nations Cup would clash with FIFA’s Club World Cup, which is due to begin on February 3.

Egyptian club, Al-Ahly, the African champions, have complained they could lose as many as 10 players to their national team, which would compromise their chances at the Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi.

Worries over Covid-19 as well as insecurity in parts of Cameroon , have also led to suggestions the tournament could again be postponed.

Various Cameroonian football heroes, including the recently elected president of the Cameroonian Football Federation, Samuel Eto’o, want the tournament to go ahead as planned.
