Water shortage hits Sagnarigu Municipality

Tamale, Nov. 22, GNA – Some communities in the Sagnarigu Municipality of the Northern Region are bearing the brunt of acute water shortage in the area, compelling residents to resort to unwholesome sources of water for various activities.

Communities affected include SSNIT, Fuo, Kalipohin, Nyanshegu and Gumani.

Alhassan Rafiu, a washing bay operator, told the Ghana News Agency on Monday that operating his business had become more expensive as a result of the water shortage and appealed to the Ghana Water Company Ltd (GWCL) to respond swiftly to restore water supply.

As at 0700 hours when the GNA visited the Fuo Community Dam, 13-year old Mohammed Aisha, a junior high school pupil, was at the dam to draw water for her family before preparing for school.

“My mother has been unwell and because of the water shortage, I have to fetch water here for the family before I go to school. I have always been late for school since the water shortage hit the community,” she said.

Mr Abudu Abdallah, the Assembly Member for SSNIT-Fuo Electoral Area, said the irregular water supply was adversely affecting socio-economic activities of residents and appealed to Management of the GWCL to address the situation as quickly as possible.

Mr Joshua Ampah, the Northern Regional Distribution Manager, GWCL, gave the assurance that the problem would soon be addressed to ensure regular water supply to the communities.
