Accra, Nov. 16, GNA – Madam Mavis Hawa Koomson, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, has donated fish fingerlings and fish feeds to support fish farming in the James Camp Prison.
The Camp received 1,600 tilapia fingerlings, 427 bags of fish feed, 3,000 catfish fingerlings for its three fish ponds and undisclosed amount of money under the initiative, “Aqua Culture for Food and Jobs.”
She said the initiative was part of measures to encourage individuals and institutions to go into fish farming and ensure food security.
Madam Koomson said she had visited 95 institutions and 200 groups, which were ready to invest in fish farming and stated the readiness of the Ministry to offer them technical support.
She said the Ministry was engaging the Ministry of Education to get schools involved in the campaign and called for the support of all.
Mr Hanson Awuku, the Director of Prisons in charge of Agriculture at James Camp Prison, said the inmates needed capacity building in fish farming and called for support from stakeholders.
James Camp Prison is a model “halfway home” where prisoners who have served part of their sentences in other prisons are sent to be trained for effective reintegration into society.
It was established in the year 1948 and caters mainly for young offenders and juveniles.
The Camp trains the inmates in vocational skills like tailoring, carpentry, water production and shoe making.
They are also given tuition in ICT and moral education.
