Accra, Sept. 15, GNA – Some old students of the then Senya Methodist Middle School (now Senya Methodist Junior High School) in the Awutu Senya West District, Central Region, have demonstrated love to their former teacher with the donation of unspecified amount of money.
Mr. Samuel Kojo Awotwi, 76, now blind, received the support for a “better retirement” at a short ceremony at Senya Breku.
Mr. Awotwi started his teaching career at Senya Bereku in 1973 as a trained teacher and had been there until his retirement in 2005.
The old students, who completed the school between 1984 and 1990, said the gesture was to show appreciation for the meritorious services of Mr Awotwi to the school, the community and his students.
Speaking on behalf of the students, Professor Joseph Essibu, Founder and Director of Ideal College, recounted how Mr Awotwi showed dedication and selflessness in engaging his students and said he deserved to be celebrated.
He said Mr Awotwi played a vital role in the lives of his students not only as a teacher, but also as a mentor and a coach, which had shaped many till now, some of whom had risen to higher and reputable places as career persons.
Prof Essibu said they, therefore, decided to show him love and gratitude and expected that, “This cash donation will go a long way in augmenting your living condition while supporting other areas of your life that may require financial support”.
Mr Awotwi expressed gratitude for the support and said, “This goes to prove that a teacher’s reward can be obtained on earth and not only in heaven as the saying goes”.
He advised teachers to be passionate about their work and go the extra mile to prepare pupils and students to become assets to the nation.
