Bimbilla (N/R), Sept 13, GNA – Nanumba North Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has engaged influential youth leaders, persons with disability amongst other stakeholders in the area on preventing violent extremism in the municipality.
The day’s event, held at Bimbilla, formed part of the Preventing Electoral Violence and Providing Security to the Northern Border Regions of Ghana project funded by the European Union to amongst others counter violent extremism in the country.
The engagement was aimed at equipping participants, especially the youth with the relevant information on violent extremism and radicalism so that they guard against being recruited to perpetuate violence.
Participants included; Assembly Members, Religious Leaders, Traditional Authorities, Members of the Security Services, Heads of Department, youth leaders of political parties, Nanumba North Youth Parliament, patrons of NCCE Civic Education Clubs, Nanung Peace Initiative amongst other stakeholders.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mr Evans Vorvor, Bimbilla District Police Commander educated the youth on violent extremism, early warning signals, community surveillance, and measures to counter such extremist activities.
DSP Mr Vorvor called for support from the youth in terms of sharing information to make the work of the security services effective and efficient.
Mr Abdulai Yaquob, Municipal Chief Executive for Nanumba North commended people of the area for helping to sustain peace in the area over the past three years, and urged them to continue to sustain it.
Mr Yaquob mentioned the emerging issue of kidnapping in the municipality saying the Security Council was monitoring the situation.
Mr Issahaku Mahamudu, Nanumba North Municipal Director of the NCCE emphasised the need for peace, tolerance and national cohesion amongst residents to deepen their security consciousness at personal and community level.
Mr Mahamudu called for an increased trust and mutual respect for the work of the security services to ensure peace and protect all.
Participants especially the youth groups resolved to report any suspected characters in their communities to the security services to facilitate law and order.
