Ashaiman, Sept. 17, GNA – Fire Thursday dawn destroyed some wooden structures serving as rooms for some squatters at Old Tulaku in the Ashaiman Municipality.
Although the cause of fire is not known, some residents believe it was caused by an electrical fault.
There were no casualties but seven structures were burnt to ashes rendering the residents homeless.
Divisional Officer III, Richmond Vanderpuye, the District Commander of the Tema-Ashaiman Motorway Fire Station, said they had a distress call from one Sumaila Ali, who reported the fire outbreak around 0240 hours.
The Fire team was dispatched to the scene and arrived there at 0244 hours, he said, and the fire was doused by 0320 hours, 45 minutes after the firefighters arrived.
DOIII Vanderpuye said they were investigating the cause of fire adding that
personal belongings of the victims were totally burnt and entreated the residents to adhere to fire safety measures to prevent such fires.
He urged them to always contact the Ghana National Fire Service as quickly as possible in times of fire and not wait until it escalated, which could result in casualties.
Meanwhile, Mr David Mawuko, an opinion leader, who witnessed the fire incident, appealed to the National Disaster Management Organisation to support the victims.
Mr Emmanuel Sadofiah, a security officer, a victim, said he got home from work in the morning to witness the sad spectacle, adding that all his belongings, including his Identification Cards, cheque book, and undisclosed amount of money, were totally burnt.
Madam Gifty Serdiofia, a 60-year-old woman, told the Ghana News Agency that the fire gutted her structure some few seconds after she had gotten out of her room and that she was unable to retrieve anything, adding; “I’ve lost everything, including my mobile phone.”
She called for support to enable her live a meaningful life.
When the GNA got to the scene, some of the victims were searching through the ruins to see if they could retrieve some metals.
