Several dead in Tajikistan earthquake

Moscow, July 10, (dpa/GNA) – At least five people were killed and others injured in an earthquake in the Central Asian republic of Tajikistan on Saturday.

The five fatalities occurred in the Tajikabad region about 230 kilometres east of the capital Dushanbe, the civil defence service said.

In the Rasht region, two injured minors had to be taken to hospital.

Buildings and electrical lines were damaged in several villages. Several families had to be accommodated in emergency shelters.

President Emomali Rachmon ordered the formation of a special commission to record the damage, coordinate rescue work and organize the removal of debris.

Medical care and provision of food were also being taken care of, according to the statement.

“The quake had a magnitude of 6 at the epicentre and up to 3 in Dushanbe,” the civil defence said. The epicentre of the morning quake was about 165 kilometres north-east of Dushanbe.
