At least 18 dead in road crash in Algeria

Algiers, July 10, (dpa/GNA) – A truck collided with a passenger bus in eastern Algeria, killing 18 people and injuring 11 others, state security services said on Saturday.

The crash took place Friday night on a road linking the cities of Jigel and Constantine, they added.

The bus was carrying passengers returning from a trip to the coastal city of Jigel.

Witnesses said the truck driver seemed to lose control of the wheel and hit the bus.

The exact cause of the accident is not yet clear.

There were more than 10,200 road accidents in Algeria in the first five months of this year, leaving at least 1,300 people dead, according to official figures.

Authorities often blame reckless driving for traffic accidents in the North African country.
