UN says more action is needed as trillions lost through cybercrime

Geneva, June 30, (dpa/GNA) – Countries must do more to prevent cybercrime, according to a report by a UN agency, which estimated that the IT and telecom sector has suffered up to 6 trillion dollars in damage this year so far.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) urged countries to improve their cycbersecurity to prevent unlawful intrusion into systems and the manipulation of data.

Measures to prevent cybercrime are best in the United States, the ITU said after an evaluation of questionnaires. It ranked Saudi Arabia third, Russia fifth and Turkey 11th in its assessment of countries’ precautions.

Meanwhile the number of people using the internet around the world has risen rapidly, and is expected to double by 2030, when 90 per cent of the world population will be online.

Today, 3.5 billion people have access to the internet, a number expected to reach 7.5 billion by 2030, the ITU said.

Only 1 billion people were online in 2007. Now, 1 billion people have gone onlilne for the first time since 2015.
