Tanyigbe (V/R), June 12, GNA – Togbe Kodi Adiko VI, Paramount Chief of the Tanyigbe Traditional Area in the Volta Region has commissioned the Tanyigbe Green Legacy Initiative to drive tree planting agenda in the traditional area.
The initiative, launched on the day of Green Ghana Project, a nationwide effort to plant five million trees, is intended to drive a campaign for the planting of trees, facilitate access to seedlings, and provide appropriate technologies to nurture and grow trees in the community.
The Tanyigbe Green Legacy Initiative, which is being rolled out in partnership with the Volta Regional Forestry Commission, would see the planting of 5,000 trees in its first phase.
Present at the launch were the Chiefs and Elders, Forestry Officials, students and Tanyigbe youth, who volunteered to assist in the planting of 1,200 trees.
Togbe Kodi Adiko thanked the Forestry Commission for donating over 2,000 seedlings and assigning officials to supervise the process.
He emphasised the value of trees to his citizens and encouraged them to do the best to ensure the re-afforestation of Tanyigbe.
Togbe Adiko thanked all present, noting that the initiative was a commitment of Tanyigbe Traditional leaders to protect the environment.
“Trees are vital to our lives and we are embarking on this initiative to save our environment for the present and the unborn generation”.
The Paramount Chief challenged the youth to protect the environment and see it as a civic duty to preserve the country’s ecology.
Representatives from the Municipal Forestry Commission were present at the ceremony and expressed their delight at the launch of the project.
The over 100 students from the Tanyigbe Secondary School who participated were shown how to nurture the trees and were admonished on the importance of preserving the natural environment.
