Six dead in blast at limestone quarry in south India

New Delhi, May 8, (dpa/GNA) – At least six workers died in a blast at a limestone quarry in India’s southern state of Andhra Pradesh on Saturday, police said.

A large quantity of explosive material, used for blasting rocks, blew up when it was being unloaded from a vehicle at the quarry situated in the Kadapa district.

“We have recovered six bodies so far. Rescue operations have been launched to determine if there are more casualties,” district police chief KKN Anburajan said by phone from the scene.

Domestic media reported at least 40 workers were present at the site at the time of the incident but there was no official confirmation.

State Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed condolences over the deaths of the workers. He ordered an inquiry to determine the cause of the accident.
