Rome, May 5, (dpa/GNA) – Italy’s anti-Mafia investigators have launched major raids against an ‘Ndrangheta drug trafficking network that is also alleged to have done business in Germany, Italian news agency ANSA reported on Wednesday.
Several suspects were arrested in the strike against the Mafia organization. The raids were led by the public prosecutor’s office in Turin, the capital of the Piedmont region.
According to the newspaper La Repubblica, the ‘Ndrangheta gangs had connections to southern Germany, to the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg in the Lake Constance area. The criminals also had connections to Spain and Romania.
According to the information, several hundred investigators were involved in the operation.
The clans are accused of international drug trafficking. Real estate was also confiscated.
The ‘Ndrangheta is one of the most powerful Mafia organizations in the world and has long had a foothold in Germany. It is based in the Calabria region, the tip of the Italian boot.
It dominates the international drug trade, but also earns its money with arms deals, money laundering, in the construction sector and in other economic sectors.
