Tokyo, May 20, (dpa/GNA) – The value of outbound shipments from Japan surged 38 per cent year on year to 7.18 trillion yen (65.8 billion dollars) in April in the midst of an economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, a government report showed on Thursday.
The reading represented the second straight monthly rise as pandemic-led restrictions began to ease in China, Europe and the United States.
Shipments to China, Japan’s largest trading partner, jumped 33.9 per cent year on year to 1.58 trillion yen, while imports edged up 0.7 per cent to 1.75 trillion yen, according to a preliminary report issued by the Finance Ministry.
Exports to the US soared 45.1 per cent to 1.28 trillion yen, with vehicle shipments up 19.2 per cent, the report showed.
Japan’s overall imports climbed 12.8 per cent to 6.9 trillion yen, which led to a trade surplus of 255.3 billion yen.
