Tehran, May 6, (dpa/GNA) – Police are investigating the death of a Swiss diplomat in Tehran, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.
“Police are currently intensively investigating the circumstances that led to the diplomat’s death,”
spokesperson Saeed Khatibzadeh said.
The Foreign Ministry deeply regrets the “bitter” incident and is in ongoing contact with the Swiss Embassy, Khatibzadeh said.
The diplomat’s body is currently in the forensic department and is due to be handed over to the embassy after the investigation is complete, he said, according to IRNA state news agency.
The diplomat died after falling from the 18th floor of a high-rise building in northern Tehran on Monday evening, police said.
Her body was discovered in the apartment complex garden the following day by a member of her domestic staff.
A Swiss Foreign Ministry spokesperson confirmed a fatal incident but did not provide further details.
The diplomat worked in the department representing US diplomatic interests in Iran, according to sources.
Switzerland has represented Washington’s interests in Tehran after diplomatic ties were severed between Iran and the United States more than 40 years ago.
