Jakarta, May 7, (dpa/GNA) – Indonesia’s Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra province erupted on Friday, sending thick volcanic ash 2,800 metres into the sky, the country’s geological agency said.
The eruption lasted more than six minutes, but there were no reports of casualties, the agency said.
Residents should stay out of an exclusion zone of 4 to 5 kilometres away from the peak, it added.
Mount Sinabung has been erupting intermittently for years. In 2016, nine villagers were killed after the volcano ejected searing gas and volcanic materials known as pyroclastic flow.
Indonesia has the largest number of active volcanoes in the world with 127 volcanoes.
